Block printing holds a place of pride in India and is the age-old craft of printing fabric using using wooden blocks which has been perfected over generations.
Hand carved blocks are used to manually stamp beautiful designs onto cotton fabric, relying solely on the experience and precision of the master printer. Once placed a firm tap is applied which makes a rhythmic ‘thump thump’ sound, this applies the ink to the cloth.
Each colour has a separate block which has been individually carved and one printed t compose the final design. It is a labour intense art which is performed with patience.
Repetition and symmetry are key to block printing and requires balance and a keen eye from the printer. Master printers work on long tables covered in cotton dipping and printing each block in turn.
Our female led studio in Jaipur, focuses on slow manufacturing which works with the seasons. They carve the blocks by hand and print using azo free dyes. Metres of cotton are then left to dry in the hot India sun. The final fabrics are left with a distinctly handmade essence with a casual and colourful aesthetic, adding charm to any home.
